Mission
The United Nations Association of the United States of America Seattle Chapter is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that supports the work of the United Nations and encourages active civic participation in the most important social and economic issues facing the world today. As the nation's largest grassroots foreign policy organization and the leading center of policy research on the U.N. and global issues, UNA-USA offers Americans the opportunity to connect with issues confronted by the U.N., from global health and human rights to the spread of democracy, equitable development, and international justice. Through the work of the Seattle chapter, we educate the community about the work of the United Nations, and encourages public support for strong U.S. leadership in the U.N.
Seattle Chapter
During the Second World War concerned Seattleites began meeting to discuss global issues. By 1948, UNA Seattle was born. In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt began traveling all over the country to drum up support for the UN and UNA-USA was founded.
The purpose of UNA Seattle is to act as a catalyst to
promote the principles of the UN Charter which states: "to maintain
international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among
nations; to promote cooperation among nations for the purpose of
solving international economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian
problems and promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms;
and to serve as a center for harmonizing the actions of nations in
attaining these common ends." Over the past two years with the Iraq
war, the United Nations has faced what is probably its greatest
challenge, which threatens its relevance and viability. Kofi Annan has
set up a high level panel to recommend reform of the UN, particularly
relative to the Security Council.
