We at the Seattle Chapter of the UNA URGE YOU to get involved with issues that you feel passionate about. Join us in promoting knowledge of what the UN does, and how it affects all of us in this global community, or take action on your own by contacting your government officials regarding issues that YOU care about. Remember, change begins with someone, and that someone is YOU!
The following is a note from the UNA Seattle webmaster (who is an volunteer IT consultant looking for more contracts/contacts - specializing in helping small businesses with all of their computer needs), and does not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of the UNA or the UNA Seattle or any other associated organization.
This is an issue, which I am deeply concerned about. In this country we are slowly moving towards a system of electronic balloting, and vote counting. As a computer scientist, and a citizen this troubles me greatly, as once you computerize things, the possibility for error, and outright fraud increases exponentially. If you have voted recently in King County Washington, you most likely voted on an electronic machines that use software that HAS NOT BEEN CERTIFIED FOR USE in the state of Washington. This means that there has never been a check to make sure that these machines count ballots correctly, or that a programmer has not made an error, or deliberately set them to count incorrectly. These machines DO NOT provide any means of auditing, so once you have cast your vote, it may or may not be counted, and THERE IS NO WAY TO VERIFY your vote. There is no paper ballot to check against, you have to trust the machine. A machine, which more than likely allows votes to be changed after the fact, WITH NO RECORD of changes that have been made. I urge you to learn more at BlackBoxVoting.org This is an issue that affects all of us, no matter how we may decide to vote. Please urge your government representatives not to privatize your vote!
